Eric J Exelbert MD is a board-certified pediatric intensivist and board-certified pediatrician. He is also registered in the Medical Marijuana Use Registry, meaning he is permitted to authorize the use of medical cannabis for qualifying patients. Through his pediatric ICU experience, Dr. Exelbert has amassed a significant understanding of the Endocannabinoid System (ECS), a network of endogenous cannabinoid receptors that are located primarily throughout the mammalian immune and nervous systems. It is this endocannabinoid system that mediates the therapeutic effects of medical marijuana. In many conditions, dysfunction of the endocannabinoid system is involved in pathogenesis. Therefore, the therapeutic administration of cannabinoids proves effective in treating many illnesses because of its restorative effect on endocannabinoid tone and neurotransmission.
